At Staveley Juniors we recognise the importance of spelling and how it impacts on our children's progress across the curriculum. We believe that every child should be given the tools to spell confidently and accurately. We now have a new spelling programme in place which we believe will enable all our children to make fantastic progress in English.
How does it work? (More than just a list!)
Children in year 5 have been split into 4 smaller teaching groups. The children are taught spelling rules each week in 3 sessions which last for 20 minutes; children are given the opportunity to learn about, investigate and explore different spelling rules. The emphasis is on giving our children a deeper understanding as to why words are spelt the way they are. We encourage our children to apply the rules they have been taught and we monitor the impact this has in their writing across the curriculum.
Each week all the children have spelling homework to complete. The homework consists of 10 words to learn. The children have to 'look, cover, write and check' their spellings as well as using the words in a sentence to show they understand how the word can be used. During the spelling test, children are tested on all 10 spellings and we may throw in an extra couple just for good measure. These two extra spellings would follow the same rule/pattern taught that week and will provide the children with an opportunity to apply what they've learnt during the test.
